Re-Shoot, Re-Dub, Re-Cut.

Podcast

Last term I created a podcast regarding celebrity 'gossip' and news at the time. For this project I intend to produce this further and improve it, by doing a follow up story and adding an interview. By adding an interview it gives the podcast depth and it also is a good update for me to do.
Although by adding an interview it will give my podcast depth and interest I am not able to access the people in which I reported on. To over come this I will need to add a local story, so that I am able to interview a member of the public and add this to my podcast. In my previous podcast I was able to include a couple of stories as well as quotes, I also added some music to the beginning and playing in the background which I really liked, I will do this again.
In regards to other things in which I could add to my podcast I could add more visual things, for example videos and images of the subject in which I am discussing. This makes it interesting as you are able to view what the podcast is discussing.

In the back of the podcast I could use more relevant audio, for example when discussing ' I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' I could use the theme tune in the background, this will make it more relevant. This will be adding small, but vital changes to the podcast. The audio in which I used in the background can then be used at the opening song and at the end, this will give it more structure.

The article above is the news article in which I will briefly describe, then get a member of the public to give their opinion on the fact. It discusses the funding that has been given for a new primary care unit in Trowbridge. It also talks about how the chairman of the Trowbridge Area Board Campus appreciates the encouraging work however thinks indoor leisure facilities need to be created.

Production

After devising a plan of how I would improve my work from the previous brief I went on to create my podcast. I created a new script I would go by, this included celebrity news, local news, and an interview, giving it more depth and interest compared to the last one I produced.
I recorded my podcast using an audio recorder with the microphone it comes with as opposed to attaching a microphone. In the last podcast I recorded using a hand held microphone and kept the same distance away when I spoke, the audio came out with good quality and levels that I was happy with. Despite this I decided to use the built in mic to see the difference and personally I cannot notice a difference. I took multiple takes of me saying my script so that when it came to editing I had plenty of options in case I needed too, this was useful and I will do this if I create another podcast.

After I had recorded my podcast, including interview, I went on to edit it in Adobe Premiere. I needed to find some soundtracks to go in the background, in my last podcast I used the same piece of audio ( from YouTube Library) throughout the whole thing. Therefore this time I wanted to change it up a bit, therefore I downloaded a new track to run alongside me speaking, however I also downloaded the ' Im a celebrity get me out of here' theme tune to go in the background of that particular segment. It makes it more interesting and lively in my opinion!

I came across a few issues by holding the audio recorder by hand, for example when I introduced the interview I over came it by adjusting the audio gain. I set it higher where my voice sounded quieter and was also able to slightly lower it in the parts where I sounded a little loud. Not only did I adjust my voice, I also had to make the backing track a lot quieter so it was comfortably playing in the background and so my voice was the main focus.

Audio Production.

Entertainment Podcast

After undertaking research from previous podcasts (here) I then was able to produce my own audio podcast using a microphone. As mentioned in the previous podcast I done an 'Entertainment News' podcast regarding celebrity news. After I had recorded it, ensuring the audio levels were level, I continued to edit it using Adobe Premier. I found some music off YouTube Library, again as discussed in the previous blog, so I merged this in with my own audio, do give it a slight 'jingle' at the beginning and something to hear throughout. I lowered the audio gain on the music slightly, and done the same with my recording of audio ( setting the gain slightly louder) to make the music flow nicely in the background and not over power the audio.
In relation to the research I did, my podcast includes a jingle and one person talking, the majority of podcasts I looked at in particular ( entertainment) included either one person talking with video evidence to match the news article, or more of an 'interview' style.

I included relevant audio (pop) to link to the audience and target market, I also made it just over 60 seconds long, so ideally I would have made it longer, however I didn't want to have the music playing for too long either before or after the report as I felt it was unnecessary.

Podcast Research & Analysis.

Entertainment News Research

In my research today I found some examples of podcasts and news articles on Youtube as well as BBC Entertainment, I focused mainly on the entertainment segments as I intend to produce a 90 podcast discussing the entertainment news. After listening to these examples I am able to gather information such as the audio they use in the background and if they add any other audio, such as the person that they're talking about.

My first example differs to my second example because the first one shows one person discussing the issue whilst incorporating different visuals and videos from other places( pre recorded). At the beginning of the clip they play footage of Kendall Jenner being interviewed on a TV show giving her brief opinion on the matter, in the background of this plays their 'theme tune' which plays during the entire video, apart from again near the end of the video when they show the same interview from the beginning.
This style of news is informative and it also gives examples of what they are disguising throughout (quotes, photos...) so it is not just a podcast with audio, this is a good example of what I would like to take inspiration from in regards to the content, however I will not include any footage in my end result.

                        http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-38015418

On the other hand I have attached a link to a BBC Entertainment article. This is a podcast that was on radio, in consists of a live phone call, this is more of an interview in which consists of two people, one being the interviewer and the other being Gary Barlow finding out how much someone payed for  Take That to play a private show, all proceeds going to the charity Children In Need. This style isn't something I will use as I am not interviewing someone, however the fact that it is a podcast that doesn't consist of any images of videos is where I will take inspiration from.
The interviewer is based in a studio whilst the caller will be in a location, there is quiet music playing in the background ( like a jingle ) so it is not entirely silent.

Legal Music / Audio

  • Creative Commons

  • Royalty Free

  • Fair Use

There are three main different ways to gather audio and music, however there are certain restricitons regarding copyright, so there are different ways you can download music.
Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation that has drafted a set of free and voluntary copyright licenses that may be used by any creator for their content. These can be taken from websites such as SoundCloud as shown below.

Royalty Free Music refers to a type of music licensing that allows the purchaser to pay for the music license only once but to use the music for as long as desired. For example the website linked below lists multiple types of royalty free music and sfx that you can purchase and use in our videos.

  http://www.premiumbeat.com/artists/hartley

Lastly Fair Use music is music that permits limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring the permission for the rights holders. For example using music for education purposes (in a classroom to teach etc) would be fair use of the music, as opposed to using it in the cinema illegally.

Podcast...

After researching podcasts and similar projects I gathered some entertainment news I wanted to use in the podcast, this information coming from websites such as The Sun. In addition to this I also created a script I would use when recording, this would allow me to keep to the point and deliver the information more effectively. My podcast is non-fiction and delivers true events and news, so taking this into consideration I then needed to gather some audio that I wanted to use in the background of my recording. My 'target audience' would be those of the younger generation perhaps, I decided to find some 'pop' music from the YouTube Audio Library. This allowed me to download the audio to use in the background without any copyright problems as discussed above. By choosing pop music it correlates to the podcast itself, the music would be associated with the intended audience this is why I chose it.

Behind The Scenes.

Photography & Audio Techniques Explored...

StoryBoard

In todays lesson I drew my storyboard for my stop motion video, in it I included details of shots I want to do and where I roughly want it to go. I decided to keep it short as included an animal will have its difficulties so if I did not want to plan it too much in advance.

After doing research I wanted to upload my final video to the platform of Youtube, as well as this I have taken into consideration the type of audio I intend to use, I will be using music and smaller sound effects in the back which I intend to record on my phone and insert in the background of my film.

Overview

In Audio we have been exploring multiple different techniques in order to create good quality audio to mix into films. In the first few lessons we researched platforms for videos to be uploaded and the differences between them that can be found here , in addition to this we went out with an audio recorder and tried to record a conversation in challenging places (outside near traffic, inside with talking and background noise etc). The technique we used for this was to hold the microphone just below our face in the middle of the two people talking, we thought by using this process you would get even audio from both people talking, and it is close enough to hear us as well as some additional background noise to make it interesting. This was proven to work as you could perfectly hear us having a conversation as well as noise in the background, so I knew that if I wanted to add audio to my photomation this is the technique I would use.
So when it came to creating our photomation film about ourselves, we created the story boards and I then went home and tested out how difficult it may be working with a dog. This was interesting to say the least. So I initially wanted my dog to be in the whole of the film, however I did not take into account how hyper she is, so I adjusted my idea in order for it to still fit what I wanted to do, but just made it a little bit more creative. I played around with 'Burst' on my iPhone as this is the device I decided to film it on, it allowed me to have my dog in the photomation and made the filming process slightly easier, so the scene in which she was in I used that.
In regards to the device, I initially thought it would be better to film this photomation on my iPhone, however despite this I still wanted to challenge myself so I tried out shooting it on my Canon camera with my tripod, so I took a few test shots with that and reviewed them. Although the quality was undeniably better than on my iPhone, I found that the film flowed better with my phone, so I reverted back to my initial plan.
After I had taken my test shots with different cameras and angles I went on to film my photomation. The idea of my film was to bring things to life ( shoes, dog lead...) as I found this more interesting than just taking my dog out for a typical walk. As the process went on I tried to film in different camera angles as I knew the film would not necessarily be long so wanted to make what was there, interesting for the audience. After shooting had been completed I put all my photos on google drive and started to edit them on Adobe Premiere. This in itself was a challenge because I had never created a stop motion type video and edited it using this software, only iMovie. So after I copied all the photos into a folder I tried to add edit them together, which is where I discovered those photos that I had deleted in the process of shooting, meant that they were no longer in the correct sequence. So, I decided to open the application Automator in which allows you to change the name of files and make put them into a sequential order. After I had completed this and renamed them all I was able to add them as an image sequence and speed them up to the percent I was happy with.

Lastly I added audio to my photomation, in the background I found some music on youtube and downloaded that and added it to the background and on top of this I added in my own audio that I recorded on my iPhone using voice memos. I adjusted the audio gain to make them slightly louder at times and visa versa, this then gave me my final video with audio that I was happy with.

Over all I enjoyed creating this film and the challenged in which came with it, if I were to create another photomation I would want to do a completely different idea with different audio and take the filming/ shooting process outside. As well as this I would like to use different angles and perhaps experiment with using different point of view's, this would make the film more interesting for the audience to view and could also add more texture and interest to the film itself. In addition to these points I believe the brief was to produce a film 20-60 seconds long, however upon editing the images I only had 9 seconds of footage, I knew that I was able to add images in order to make it longer, however it would not have effectively flowed together, so I decided to keep my photomation short and work well, as opposed to longer but not add good quality ( quality over quantity ). This is why next time if I were to make another film that needed to be a certain length, to film more footage or take more images than necessary as I can always edit out scenes if I needed to make it shorter.

Media Passport : Photomation.

Large screen specific vs Mobile use

When looking at different types of video / trailers they are often created differently depending on their purposes. Something like a film trailer will have different camera angels and shots as well as quality compared to videos in which are intended to be watched on mobile phones. Sizing of the videos completely depends on the use, for example Instagram videos will be more square compared to a trailer which intentions are to be shown in the cinema and on larger TV screens.

I have chosen two very different videos that show the different types of angels, quality and intentions, the first example which is above is from Joe Sugg's Youtube channel 'ThatcherJoe', and the second example I decided to use is the trailer for The Walking Dead Season 6, which is shown on Fox.
The first video is more of a vlog style which is recorded on a small handheld canon camera, and although the quality is 1080p the video is not stabilised and the motion is rough. When watching these specific videos on a mobile device the video automatically goes to horizontal orientation but can be changed, which is what these types of videos are specifically intended for.

When comparing Joe Sugg's vlogs to something like a film or TV series trailer there are little similarities. The Walking Dead Season 6 trailer is filmed using multiple pieces of footage in a dramatic way to build tension and emotions, trailers have an aim and are perfectly sequenced and timed out, comparing something like this to a vlog is interesting because in the majority on vlogs, the footage is not planned, whereas in trailers the cameras have specific marks and points to hit, as do the people featuring in the film.

FMP Showcase.
