Flat Lay Sketch.

Plan

The next step in the process of creating my magazine was to produce a flat lay out and overall sketch of what they pages will look like and what I intend to have on the individual pages. To do this I wrote down what I wanted to include (in regards to images and articles) and then went and did further secondary research on layout of magazines. This time around I didn't look at recognisable brands and magazines, I found a website online named Issuu where users can publish their magazines to view online. This was really good as it was easy to access and I could filter the type son magazines that inspired me. From doing this research I found out that the layout I want to go for seems to be popular, which means it is good as it will then be popular, however not necessarily make it unique and stand out from the crown, never the less I believe it is something I really want to create and shall therefore do so. I have inserted a few screen shots of the layout I really like and took inspiration from:

This is from the inside of a magazine which had a variety of articles, ranging from fashion to food.

This really drew me in as I like the border around the image on the left hand page, this is something I am coming to do myself so thought it was relevant.

This is really interesting as the layering of images as well as lighting is really something I am inspired by

Lastly I liked the overlapping of these, this is something I aim to do myself.

By undertaking this secondary research, even though the larger main portion was completed I was able to get even more inspiration and image ideas that allowed my layout to progress and turn into something I really like the look of myself. Throughout this project my research will continue to happen and it is something I will continue to blog as already I can see the progress my project is making by the amount of research I have conducted. It has had a positive effect on my project as it means I am able to see how my product will turn out, I want to make it something good and that I am happy and pleased with!

So after that brief research I was able to sketch out my own flat lay of what I aim my magazine to look like, I am highly aware this might however change as I progress through the project and write the articles, this is just a brief and initial sketch!

I ensured to include my three articles which are 'Get the look', 'High end vs high street' and lastly a 'May' dedicated double page where I will add photographs and review the trends and possible trends, comparing to celebrities, shops and more. I intend to include a variety and collection of pictures in my magazine, some larger to ensure I keep up with the minimalistic idea, and then others where I will have multiple on one page, surrounded by boarders, quotes etc. That way it differentiates my magazine from a 'photography' magazine to one that is still very highly fashion based, much like the 'Love' magazines.
In my flat lay I have three- double pages (not including front or back) in which are just images. Then the rest of the pages include the articles. Although this is just a rough plan this took me a lot of time to think through and put together, I needed to make sure the placement of the articles are spread out and even with the amount of photographs. In addition to this I didn't want to keep it 'traditional' so many pages overlap with images, I intend to change the titles and placement of them as well, so that every page is unique and different!

By completing this exercise it enabled me to think about my layout, placement and arrangement. I was able to look and think about how many images (roughly) I will need when I do my photoshoot, as well as how much time in production it will take up. By doing this plan in the pre production stages it enables me to gain more time in the production process, this being that if I already have a rough idea of where everything will be places, I can set up a mock/draft version in which I can then later use when it comes to the making of my magazine. In addition to this flat lay, I will also be writing my articles up soon, this means that in the time off (easter) I will be able to thoroughly edit and make sure I have all the pieces I need to produce the magazine together, so that when we return I can put it all into InDesign. This means as well that I should be on track according to the spread sheet I produces for Production and Post Production, meaning my estimated time management skills are good!

Test Shoots & Experiments.

Experiments

This blog post is a recording of all the experiment test shoots in which I have done. Firstly I decided to create a mood board showing the main colour palette and aesthetic I am to make my magazine based on. It is a small collection of magazines, photographers and items in which all closely link with the theme I am creating this fashion magazine upon. This gives everyone reading a good idea of the type of look and aesthetic I am going for and was also more research for my to do, which in all helped me really decipher the look I want.

After acknowledging I wanted to experiment with lighting I went into the studio and did some test shots. This is a collection of 'Behind The Scenes' photographs I took which showed my set up.

For this shoot I did not have access to a backdrop as it was currently in use, so I decided to use the wall of the studio which gave me a black background in which I could work with.  You can see I used a soft box and a stronger more specific light. We draped coloured plastic over the lights to give the blue and red effects as you can see above. I also used a tripod for this shoot and only got head shots. The reason for this being that without the backdrop I didn't think it would work/be necessary for my test shots anyway. We were able to change around the lighting direction and colour film/ sheets giving it different effects which I really liked the look of, especially as I know I am able to enhance the light in post production (lightroom & photoshop)
During this shoot I was able to discover any difficulties I might come across, for example getting all the lights close enough but not in shot, as the cables are very short, and other practical things like that.

Editing

Although I have created a separate blog post on editing ( here ) I also wanted to use this blog post to show my own photographs and the way I was able to edit them. For my test shoot I specifically used the lighting techniques available, my magazine will not just consist of these types of images, however I am confident taking the other images, the lighting was something in which I had not experimented with before so chose to specifically spend my time altering this. As mentioned before I used different colours and took head shots, I edited them using Lightroom to enhance colours as well as the highlight and contrast. I also used the spot healing tool briefly as they were very close up shots and had not used this tool yet properly. I have inserted a few images below of my results.

As you can see I focused the colours to have 50/50. Upon editing I realised I should have also just had one colour being used at once as I did not get a result of this. However by doing these shoots I was able to get familiar with the equipment and how they look in comparison with the model and my over all aesthetic. These give a very dramatic look to them and I think they look really interesting compared to an 'ordinary' magazine cover and inside. I intend to merge these types of images with ones that have normal lighting too. In addition to this I also realised in the editing process of how dark they look, meaning I will need to alter my title and text colours if I use the black backdrop in my shoot. This made me realise I also want to use the white backdrop and see what the lights look like against that, as it will look better an emerge better with my colours too.

Review

By undertaking test shoot experiments I was able to put into practice what I researched. This is paramount as it allows you to use your knowledge and put it with what you have researched and are then able to come out with a product - such as the above- which I have never done before. I discovered some issues along the way, one I didn't mention was the orientation in which I use the camera. Upon editing I discovered I kept the camera on the tripod, meaning I got steady shots at the perfect height, however when it comes to my real shoot I know know I want to use the camera off the tripod, this will give the images good variety. As well as this I also shot only head shots and close ups, I didn't do a full body or from a different angle, again this is something I will do in my real shoot. This is why undertaking the test and experiment shoot was important as it made me realise the things I want to change and improve, therefore producing a product in which a lot of research, thought and passion has gone into.

Reflection On Presentation.

Presentation Feedback

In order to complete assignment two I needed to produce and present a presentation, outlining what my idea for my FMP was and additional pieces of information. I went on to Prezi to create my slideshow, I needed to include the following points:
  •  Summary of FMP and a justification as to why I chose it
  • Key parts of the process such as pre-production, production & post production
  • Time scales/dates
  • Resources needed
  • Inspirations (visual)
After assessing all these factors I was able to produce a presentation in which I was happy about. Firstly I gave a brief description of what my final project would be and why I decided to create a fashion magazine. Secondly I went on to describe the pre production in which I will undertake. This included my research as this was the main part of my pre production. After this point I decided to briefly discuss experimentations in which I will undertake, this included lighting techniques, editing as well as the paper in which I can use.
As the powerpoint goes on I was able to write about my production and post production, covering all the main areas I wanted to pin point, such as after production I want to produce questionnaires for the public to complete regarding my magazine as this will give me eve more feedback to build upon in my final blog post an review. I didn't want my presentation to be filled with text, so I decided to add a screenshot of one of the initial mind map's I created, as this would give those I was presenting to an overall style and aesthetic goal of mine. I created a short list of the materials I needed and added this too, this included softwares such as InDesign, camera equipment and the basics in which are needed to conduct a photo shoot and put together the images in a magazine format. To finish the presentation I wanted to highlight the key dates that I intend to have certain projects finished by. This gives an idea of how far ahead or behind schedule I am, and also allows me to stay on track of my work. What I didn't mention in my presentation was the additional planners I created on google sheets. I created a schedule for Pre Production, then ones for Production and Post Production, this enables you to view all the more specific points in which I intend to create during this project and is in more detail than the given brief.
To summarise, the feedback in which I was given for my presentation was that I need to ensure I know my magazine needs to be a multiple of four. Prior to this I intended to create a 16 or 18 page magazine, after receiving this information I now know to produce a 16 page magazine. We also discussed layout as prior to the presentation I was still conducting research in regards to magazine layout. I have created a flat lay of my magazine that can be viewed here, this shows all 16 pages and what I intend to have on every individual page.

Experimentation - Editing.

Editing

As part of my experiments, I wanted to not just experiment within a studio with lights and altering them, but I wanted to take images, then in the editing process experiment with the way in which they turn out. By doing this it will enable me to find the things that really work for me and what they look like. In addition to me, it gives me 'practise' and allows me time to familiarise myself with the softwares and how to successfully produce the images with the aesthetic I want, this will mainly be done using Photoshop and Lightroom. As I want to produce multiple experiments with different techniques I will not only do some minor images outside the studio, but of course within the studio environment, adjusting the lights so on and so fourth. By doing some test shoots in the studio I will be able to play with the professional background, this will really help me when editing my images as it will be the same as when I do my actual photoshoot.
I want to particularly experiment with the editing process as I am aware the aesthetic I am aiming to achieve will need to be created through a lot of editing, Although in my mood boards and mind maps I have included a lot of 'heavy' images that include a large amount of production/post production, I am also included more simplistic images in my magazine. I just wanted to make the front cover and a few other images very vivid and 'pop' in my magazine, to give good variation.

Mock-Up Front Page

Initially I used an image off the internet (www.Missguided.co.uk) to use as my 'model' as this allowed me to play around with the editing process before I undertook any test shoots myself.
I then altered the colour balance and effect on the image to change the colour, I first made it red/pink but then decided I preferred it without this kind of effect.

Here you can see the original image, followed by my edited version. I was sure to remove the background too, as I wanted to add my own with slightly more texture.
After realising I wanted to change the colour, I made it slightly lighter in contrast and altered the colour balance yet again, giving it a slightly blue tint. I really liked the way this turned out so this is defiantly something in which I will consider when it comes to my actual shoot and edit.
Once I had the image the colour I wanted it to be, I added a textured background of a white brick wall from google images. I didn't need to alter the opacity as it was the correct colour I wanted to achieve.

After doing this alteration I wanted to see what it would look like with the text and more lighting effects. For the text I downloaded a font from Da Font, when inserting it I went in to the 'blending options' and changed the blend mode to 'colour dodge' ensuring I had added a stroke, this then gave me the outline of the text which is a technique I will use in my real product.
Secondly I wanted to add a light source, therefore I went to 'Filter', 'Render' and then 'Lighting effects'. This gave me a large variety of opportunities to alter the light, both in the colour, positioning and more. I added a blue/green tint as I found the red light didn't work at all. I am aware it looks very 'edited' however with use of proper studio lights positioned the way in which I want them I am confident this will be very useful, when toned down slightly. Then on the other hand I quite like the dark look it gives, I feel it is very fitting to the type of text used and the clothing. After this I simply added a photo of a barcode so that I could play around with the positioning and layout of it and what my magazine will eventually look like.

The image above shows my final mock up magazine. I added some text, using a peachy/red/pink colour as I think it blended well with the colour shown on the top. I wasn't too fussed on getting the actual text right, so I only added a few things as this would grab a reader and also show what the magazine is about. In my final project I probably won't have too much text on the front so that the main focus is the image. I also tried out '3D mode' in photoshop as I hadn't used it yet, I really liked the way the text came out in the 3D effect (High end vs. high street).

In terms of editing I also was able to experiment with layout. I decided to mock up my front cover using a very 'typical' magazine cover however as said previously I want my front cover to have the image and logo and nothing else. So in addition to the above, I again used an image off the internet (test shots not yet completed) and mocked up a contents page.
The above shows my first experiment with a contents page. I initially thought about having the first page with the contents on, so I layered a wall, model and some text (using colour dodge, adjusting the stroke etc) to give a rough idea of how I could show what the magazine includes. However I did not fully complete this as as I progressed I decided I wanted to use a double page spread. Therefore I took some inspiration from my above working and newly acquired knowledge and produced the below.

Firstly I created an A3 size document and used the ruler as a guide to separate the separate A4 pages, this was I would be able to see where the crease would be in the page and to ensure to not layer the photograph too close to the line.

Here I had the title 'Contents' facing right, then had the number bold and filled in as well as larger than the rest of the text, this however didn't give my the look I wanted to achieve and found it was too 'black and blocky' with the text and image.
Next I flipped the title, the made the stroke a bright pink colour, to tie in with the title and some of the colours on the shirt, but ensure the fill colour was black to make it easy to ready and still stand out.

Next I enlarged the text and layered it on the image, this filled the page better and made it flow together effectively.

Next I played around with adjusting the lighting effects as done previously, the hint however was too green and did not give the aesthetic I wanted it too.

Lastly I added a pink/red tones lighting effect to tie in with the font colouring and t-shir/accessory in the photograph.

All of the above was created on photoshop and was a very rough edit for me to have done. I wanted to try and work with my layout before test shoots so that I can also see the type of images I want to take (close ups etc). This was a really interesting process and really helped me recognise what will work, in regards to layout as well as colour and positioning of fonts.

  Thoughts

By mocking up a from cover it has defiantly helped me in regards to experimenting with the effects in photoshop. I used tools that I haven't yet used which has given me more confidence in regards to using Adobe Photoshop, especially when it comes to the editing process of my magazine. In this blog post I did use all imagery off Google Images, therefore when I later experiment and take some test shots in the studio, I would like to mock up a front page, perhaps changing the layout of text, background etc. Also it has made me take into consideration the type of shot I will need for my front page specifically, for example this model's face is hidden my the text, and where the light its darker and casting a shadow, it becomes slightly difficult to read.
In addition to these points, I have taken into consideration my previous research too, and the majority of font pages have the model looking directly at the camera, with head shots being the most commonly used. When I do my own photoshoot I will ensure to get a full body shot and close up, that way I can have the choice between the two as I personally like the image I used in my mock-up as it gives full view of the clothing, and at the end of the day my magazine is based upon fashion and therefore would still be suitable. For now, I intend to create more sample products of my magazine (inside etc) as it will be a good learning experience, for this I will continue to use images off google that are appropriate, until I undertake my own test shoot, when I will then create more!

Research Reflection.

Reflection

Upon undertaking primary and secondary research I was able to identify a large range of things I did not know/take into consideration before. As explored in this blog post I created my own questionnaire for my main source of primary research, then did a number of further things for my secondary research, such as existing magazines, photographers and more.

During my research I discovered a lot of information I did not know before hand, and found a lot of blogs and websites in which I can take inspiration from, in regards to layout and content. Before undertaking any research I hoped to find out what my target audience prefer in regards to content, whether they liked image heavy, text heavy or both and I was able to receive a good amount of results to tell me that in fact 'both' was the most popular option. The questionnaire itself also allowed me to see the opinions of the target audience so that when I make my magazine I will know what they like and do not like.
In regards to the secondary research I did, I found out a lot of this in relation to layout, style, text, font and so much more. By doing this type of research (existing magazines) I am able to really decipher the ones that I like, and the things in which I read. I found a lot of the 'text' heavy magazines to lose my interest more that the 'image' based ones, however as previously stated my target audience like a balance of both. This is however a good thing as I do enjoy writing, I have already began a list of articles I want to include and will begin writing them shortly, this way when I 'mock' up my page layout I know how many articles and photographs (roughly) I have, therefore will be able to plan in advance and prior to the actual shoot.
By also researching the influencers and bloggers I was really able to see their content and gain inspiration, not only this but their use of imagery is also really interesting as a lot of the blogs I found were 'street/casual' wear, which is the main focus for my magazine.
Before undertaking any research I already had a colour scheme in place and in mind, by doing research it only made me more confident on the idea. All of the research that I did was all important, I think the three most important things I discovered would be the results of the questionnaire (text/image based question in particular) as this enabled me to specify the amount of articles in which I intend to include in my magazine. In addition to this I also found it really helpful researching and discovering other blogs and websites. The content they included really inspired me and what my articles will be based upon, they will certainly be something in which I will refer back to when writing my own articles which is why it was really important for me to undertake this specific research. I think the last piece of research that was paramount was layout. Again this was done by looking at existing magazines, I was able to look and apply the layout and content to my own work, especially when it came to experiments.

In conclusion, by undertaking the research I did I was able to really specify the over all look and aesthetic I wish to achieve for my FMP. I feel more confident in terms of content and what I will produce myself. This has all been useful, both for looking at popular photographs in magazines, down to the most popular articles and more. This research was key to producing my fmp to grow and allow my idea to expand, both as an individual and when inspired by others. I was able to pin point the parts of a magazine that I like and incorporate it into my idea and with my results from my questionnaire as this will relate to my target audience.

Experimentation - Fonts.

Fonts

In addition to the experimentation I will produce with photoshoots I am also able to experiment with font and layout. Firstly I was able to use the website 'Dafont' to explore all the available fonts. After researching FAULT Magazine I was really drawn in by the use of their font, so I am taking inspiration from them and intend to use a similar font. To discover this I was able to define the fonts I like into the categories 'Bold , Block and under the Metal' category. I am aiming to go for a similar font to this for my cover page (main title) to grab readers in, so in addition to this I will also explore possible fonts for the texts inside, such as subheadings, body and more.

This is some experimentation I did using Photoshop, Google images and the site 'Da font'. Firstly I added a background of watercolour (ensuring it was 4MP+) then changed the colour balance and levels to achieve a black and white effect. This gave the moodpboard texture and interest. Next I hand selected multiple fonts in which I particularly liked the look of, initially typing in 'Volt' in preview mode, this enabled me to see what the font would look like on my magazine if I were to use it.
I used a large selection of fonts, some more 'blocked' than others, this being that I really like the aesthetic of thick, block letters with a gothic/metal look for my magazine, however upon researching I also quite liked the juxtaposition of the fonts in which don't necessarily link to the word 'Volt' (i.e. meaning bolt of lightning) which is read as quite a powerful word. I found that the 'dainty' and more 'calming' fonts also looked really nice with my magazine name, despite this I want to have a consistent magazine, meaning everything from layout, fonts and photographs, should have a consistent theme and link, both aesthetically and literally.

The font that stood out to me the most was the one in the top left corner, the reason for this being that when I added a lighting bold to either side, I think it really tied everything together and gave a professional look to it. A result I decided to sample that font twice, once with it all filled in, and again with the stroke larger and no fill. I discovered this is what I preferred as opposed to the filled in version, as when layered on top of my front cover photograph, it will be able to fit nicely in ( layered on top for e.g.)

Here are some of my font sketches and experiments I done by hand in my sketch book, prior to crating the photoshop document

After I had chosen my front cover font I briefly went on to experiment with the other possible ways to make the font stand out. I went to photoshop and added some text onto a background of white brick. From here I adjusted the Colour Overlay, Outer Shadow and Drop Shadow. I selected colours, started with a faint pink, then increasing the brightness as I layered up. I went to Select > Modify > Contract (or Expand). By doing these steps and adding highlight where necessary I was able to create a 'Neon Tube' type of effect that can not only be used on text, but images too.
This will defiantly come in handy as the neon signs is something I really like, therefore I will be able to apply this new technique for a heading for example in my magazine.

Review

This was an important experiment to do because when creating a project (like a magazine) you need to take every detail into deep consideration. By researching fonts and the different things I can do to them helped me as I now know the font to use for my title on the font page, one of the few things in the magazine that might 'jump out' and make it look unique on a shelf.
Not only did I look at fonts but I looked at sized and layout of them, I discovered that the main size for the body of a text can vary from size 10-13 (generally speaking) and it all vary on the target audience, for example older audiences may prefer larger, more simple text (font) so that it is easier to read. For me, the size of my title will vary and be 'trial and error' if you will, I will need to see the different arrangements I can do on the page when I have my final images ready. I also want to keep it fairly traditional and have it top and centre, however this is something I can think more in depth about later on in the project, as seeing the font on top of an image is what will really make me decide how I want to have it!

Research Results.

Primary Research

As briefly discussed in my previous blog, I needed to create a Google Form questionnaire for peers to fill out, in order to receive responses that correlate to my FMP. I have successfully done this and been able to get my feedback and respond to it. Below are some images of my questionnaire and the questions I decided to add, these would enable me to decipher what I should consider more when creating the magazine.

I decided to ask a total of seven questions, all relating closely to my project. From the responses I received I was mainly surprised by the outcome to the question 'Do you prefer magazines that are image based or text based'. The reason for this being that 54.5% said 'both' and 45.5% saying 'image'. This has made me think about my magazine as I was going to have little articles - hence the minimalistic vibe and direction- however now I am going to use my other research for a different purpose. Now knowing that my target audience like almost a fair balance, I can decipher what kind of articles I want to add and what I enjoy reading myself.

This question wasn't a shock to me as I assumed the majority of people would have chosen digital. However I was very pleased there are still a large number of people who prefer printed versions. I myself love printed magazines that have vivid images and are intriguing, hence why I want to try and create my own, in my opinion text based magazines are better to read digitally. This is why when considering the different forms of the project I could create I didn't want to make a blog or website. I think the powerful images are so much more interesting and fascinating when you get to hold a physical copy.

I decided to also add was 'How often do you purchase magazines?' this was interesting as in this typically our generation view the majority of things online, seeing as I am creating a printed magazine this was one of my concerns. As previously explained, I did however want a visual magazine in which you can hold as I believe it makes images more interesting and vivid, as opposed to zooming in on an iphone to view.

These were the results, again this did surprise me as still a large amount of people purchase magazines on a weekly/monthly/yearly occurrence. However upon finding this out it does worry me slightly as it is clearly apparent that purchasing magazines is not the most popular thing. Despite this result, those whom do purchase magazines are those most likely to also be interested in fashion magazines. After receiving results like this, it makes me think about the content, for example if people do not purchase magazines 'weekly' do I want the content to be relevant for that week's trends? Or would it be better to review that particular month or season in regards to trends.

Secondary Research

After completing the majority of my primary research to find out what my target audience prefer, I then researched a variety of different things, such as bloggers, influencers etc. In my mind maps I have grabbed a few images off Google Images and linked them together, to try and show the aesthetic and style in which I am aiming for in my magazine.

By doing this type of research I am able to see what is already on the market, therefore showing me how can I make mine unique and stand out. In addition to this I am able to view the type of content included - for example on certain blogs- giving me ideas on the type of article I am then able to have in my magazine.

Blogs

Below shows a screen shot of a blog named 'ChroniclesOfHer'. This was one of the many blogs I came across when conducting my secondary research, particularly for its layout and content. The articles are very simple and then are completed with imagery. I particularly liked the blog post discussing the 'Trend Alert' on embroidery. It gave a very brief description of the style and how it has evolved to everyday clothing, then showed multiple images and sites where you can purchase pieces from. This really inspired me because in my magazine I want to have a section of what the model is wearing, then similar items of clothing available to purchase, both high end to high street
http://chroniclesofher.com/what-to-shop/11-items-with-embroidery-motifs/

Another blog I came across was actually local to Bath. She is a blogger who creates a large variety of content, i.e fashion, beauty, lifestyle, travel and more. I found her articles in which are based upon fashion more visual compared to the previous blog I discussed. There is little to no text in the ones I explored which I like, it is very simplistic and aesthetically pleasing.

http://www.whatoliviadid.com/2017/03/springtime-in-bath.html

I decided to use my secondary research to focus on content for my own magazine, as previously discussed I have already done a lot of research on existing magazines and have acquired a list in which I am going to create a mood board from and have a separate post on.

Font

When thinking about my magazine I also thought about fonts and did some research regarding them too. Seeing as the aesthetic of my magazine will be fairly 'dark' I wanted to use a really interesting font to match my aesthetic. My magazine will be everyday fashion, incorporating a variety of effects in regards to lighting and layout, making it put a unique and interesting spin on everyday fashion.
After researching magazines I came across the magazine 'FAULT'. This really stood out to me in regards to font and this is the type of font I want to use. I particularly like the shapes and the use of outline as opposed to the filled version (see below)

I took these two photographs from FAULT Online as one is in black and white and the letters are separated, then when you compare it to the colour one the letters all line up and overlap Adam Lambert. After discovering this font used on Fault magazine I was able to distinguish the font in which appeals to me and the aesthetic I am aiming for. I then went to 'Dafont' and hand picked a few fonts that interested me, the majority of them being bold, block and in the 'metal' category. Font is also something I am able to experiment with easily, not just with the font itself, but the shape, format, size and layout of it.
As of yet I am not entirely sure as to if my cover will be black and white of colour, this is something in which I will discover upon experimentation and layout.

Layout

In regards to layout I was able to find a website online (issue.com) in which had a large variety of magazines to view. I was every happy when researching to find this website as it gave me inspiration for the layout of my own magazine. I not only took inspiration from the layout, but the arrangement and way in which photographs were taken and almost manipulated. I have inserted a few images below in which really caught my attention and where the type of this I was aiming for for this project:

FMP Showcase.
